The Louis-Favre-Platz in Zurich's Aussersihl district is named after Louis Favre, a renowned engineer who oversaw the construction of the Gotthard Tunnel, a groundbreaking feat in 19th-century engineering. Despite facing numerous technical and financial challenges, Favre's firm successfully completed the tunnel, which was the longest railway tunnel in the world at the time. Unfortunately, Favre did not live to see the tunnel's completion, as he died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm in 1879.
