On the Heiligenberg, a hill south of Winterthur, stood the Chorherrenstift Heiligenberg, a monastery that existed from 1225 to 1525. The church had a unique feature: it was initially built with four altars, later expanded to six, all sponsored by nobles or citizens. During a revenge campaign against the Duke of Austria in 1355, the Zürich forces destroyed parts of the monastery, including the Jakobskirche, but it was quickly rebuilt.
