David Joris, a notorious figure in Basel's history, was a Glasmaler who got involved in the Täuferbewegung and was forced to flee his hometown. He bought the Spiesshof in 1546 and lived there until his death in 1556. The Renaissance wing of the Spiesshof, built between 1585 and 1590, is said to be haunted by Joris' ghost.
