On June 14, 1891, a train carrying over 500 passengers from Basel to Münchenstein derailed and crashed into the Birs river, resulting in over 70 deaths. The disaster occurred when the train crossed the Birs bridge, which collapsed under the weight of the train. The bridge had been built by Gustave Eiffel's company in 1875, but had suffered from structural damage after a flood in 1881.
