Major Davel, a Swiss soldier, was beheaded in 1723 at Vidy for calling for Vaud's independence from Bern. His execution site is now marked by a stele in Louis Bourget Park. Every year on April 24th, the Vaud section of the Swiss fraternity, Zofingia, commemorates his sacrifice with a procession from Château Saint-Maire to the monument at Vidy.
