The Baugenossenschaft Union (BGU) was founded in 1909 by the transportation personnel of the Platzunion Winterthur, with the goal of providing affordable housing for workers. The first houses were built in 1912/13 at the Unionsstrasse, with 35 houses and 40 apartments. The BGU was a pioneer in cooperative housing, setting an example for other cities.
