The Festung Aarburg, a fortress in Aarburg, was built in the early 12th century and later expanded by the city of Bern between 1659 and 1673 to secure its territories and serve as a prison. Today, it is the only preserved fortress of the early modern period in Switzerland and is listed as a cultural asset of national significance. Since 1893, the fortress has housed the Kantonale Jugendheim, a youth detention center.
